The Latest & Greatest

by rundanrun on May 2, 2012

I tell you what, coming up with blog titles is somewhat difficult. I can’t help but feel cheesy.

Anyhow, I suppose I should give the world a little update on RDR and related topics. Let’s start off with some notable press and follow up with some goodies.

Paste Magazine recently listed Run Dan Run as one of the 12 bands in South Carolina that you should listen to right now. That was a pretty big honor, especially considering there is a lot of great music coming out of SC right now.

Our label Hearts & Plugs released its free debut sampler featuring 3 songs from each of the 4 artists on the roster, The Lovely Few from Columbia, SC, Mr. Jenkins from New York, NY, Ashley Hopkins from Durham, NC, & of course yours truly, Run Dan Run from Charleston, SC. There are some true gems on this sampler so be sure to download it (did I mention that is was 100% free?).

Also, our label mates The Lovely Few just released a full-length record titled “The Perseids” as well as a FREE 4-song EP titled “The Orionids.” In case you didn’t know already, The Lovely Few sings lovely electronic indie pop songs about meteors. As dry as that subject might sound, these songs are not in the least bit uninteresting but rather quite the opposite. I discover some profound truths whenever I listen to The Lovely Few, not to mention some incredible hooks and delicious programming (and I am not one to typically be into programming, most of it sounds cheesy to me). Also, Mike Mewborne has a lovely voice, I could listen to him sing anything and like it. So my suggestion is to start off with “The Orionids” because… it’s free, get into that and then go pick up “The Perseids” and prepare to have your boat rocked.

Lastly I would like to mention 2 upcoming shows, one this Friday, May 4th at Fresh Brewed in Myrtle Beach with Bonaparte, This Is For My Friends, + 2 more. It is a charity event with proceeds going to South by Southeast, an organization dedicated to music education. Run Dan Run will also be performing as a duo (Dan McCurry + Nick Jenkins) at Tin Roof in Charleston, SC on Saturday, May 19th. It’ll be a good time I am sure. We don’t get to perform much together since everyone is so spread out these days, Nick in NYC & Ash in Durham, NC and of course myself here in Charleston, SC. Hope to see you all out at one (or both) of these shows.

Also, here is what Shuffle Magazine has to say about the Scene SC 2012 Sampler. Shuffle picked our track “Box-Type Love” as one of their faves (!) on the sampler.

Our first ever music video is now up! It is for our single “Lovesick Animal” from our new album Normal and has now premiered at The Silver Tongue. The video was directed by yours truly and filmed and edited by the uber-talented Hunter Boone. It was shot around downtown Charleston, SC โ€“ the screaming scene and party scene in Space 227, the other indoor scenes were shot in my downtown apartment and the outdoor scenes over a few downtown blocks. The โ€œLovesick Animalโ€ video features Dan McCurry, Joe Suthers, Emily Haney, Clint Thomas, Peter Spearman, Stephen Pappas, Rebecca Smith, Graham Jenkins, Patrick Walker, Lacii Paul, MacKenzie Kohler and Lauren Russell. The honey bear (not Pooh Bear) portrays a lovesick animal (worn by Dan McCurry, except during the screaming scene) which the viewer follows through the entire video โ€“ from getting up in the morning and doing mundane activities like exercising to getting down with his animal BFFs. Note: this honey bear has some mild anger management issues.

Also, we are very proud to represent South Carolina with The State of Music. Every state has a representative band and we were lucky enough to be chosen to represent SC. Dom at The State of Music is doing an excellent job putting this all together. One really cool feature at The State of Music is the album series, 5 albums featuring 10 songs each from the representative bands involved in the project. The first of 5 has just been released in both digital and physical formats. Be sure to pick it up. All the money raised from the sale of The State Of Music albums will be donated to Camden Calling.

And don’t forget, black graphic band t-shirts are in style this year. They go great with matching album covers.

Spinner MP3 of the Day!

by rundanrun on January 16, 2012

Announcement: Our song “Box-Type Love” was the MP3 of the Day on Spinner. Be sure to download it here.

Our music video for “Lovesick Animal.” is also getting wrapped up tonight. Hopefully it’ll debut either sometime this week or next week. Very excited about our first ever music video!

There are some other good things cooking in the pot right now. Don’t want to spill too many juicy details this early in the game so I’ll have to save such morsels for later (plus, what else will I have to talk about later if I reveal all now on the wide world o’ the interweb?).

Happy New Year! Here’s 2012’s first update.

by rundanrun on January 7, 2012

Hello folks/visitors,

Welcome to 2012. This year is going to be a good year, I think. First off, I would like to let you all know that our album “Normal” will be released nationally on this Tuesday, January 10th. The time has come for the world to know what it is like to be “Normal.” (pun intended) We’ll be hitting the college radio airwaves as well as press outlets, you know, the works. Watch out.

If you didn’t know already, we’re on a label, our own label. It is called Hearts & Plugs. It currently features Run Dan Run, Mr. Jenkins, & Ashley Hopkins. We’ll be releasing our first sampler in a month or two that will be entirely free and will feature songs from everyone included a few exclusives. I’ll keep you up to date on that, in the meantime, be sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, & check out our Youtube. We’re all very excited about what H&P will be doing this coming year.

I recently had the opportunity to pen a few articles with Scene SC as a guest writer. It was one of the coolest things I’ve gotten to do through my music celeb status ๐Ÿ˜‰ I chose to write about my recording mantras as well as my favorite gear used on our album Normal. Please enjoy my words of wisdom, especially if you record your own music ๐Ÿ™‚

Notice I like to use smileys? ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ˜› :*

Also, we’ve gotten a few great reviews lately that I’d like to share; We Are Unseen, Consequence of Sound, Baby Sue, Impose Magazine (top albums, #9), Charleston Scene, & Independent Clauses (listed in top 50 mixtape).

And one last thing, I’d like to encourage everyone to check out our close friends from Columbia, The Lovely Few. They just released a new album titled “The Perseids.” It is a lovely LP centered around the Perseids meteor shower. Check it out and if you like it, please consider purchasing a copy. I can’t stress enough the importance of supporting independent musicians. Your support has a direct influence on the creation of more good music.

Thanks for keeping up with us. To 2012!

Merry Christmas, Ya’ll!

by rundanrun on December 26, 2011

Just want to take a moment to say “Merry Christmas” & “Happy Holidays.” For me the holidays are about family. As I get older my family means more and more to me. Life is rather short. Just remember to take a moment with those you love. And don’t forget to take a moment out for yourself to do something for yourself, something meaningful that you can be proud of later. In other words, take care of those who take care of you including yourself.

Here’s to 2012.

Merry Christmas

by rundanrun on December 11, 2011

Here’s a video of a cover of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” that I had done a few years back. Always good to listen to during the holiday season. This is definitely one of my favorite Christmas songs of all time. So beautiful.

Happy Holidays,
